Electrical Matters

The electrics consist of connections between  the motor and LT ign coil circuit and the loom which connects the lighting coils to headlamp, tail-lamp and horn. 
Coil
The coil is held by 2 screws underneath the frame adjacent to the centre stand.... removed in the pic below

I checked coil operation by flashing a PP9 battery between the coil frame and LT terminal whilst a sparking plug is also held in contact with the coil frame. This resulted in a bright spark so at least the coil is functional.

Removal of the headlamp has been covered. The shell is attached using a dished washer on the inside, remove tjis and the shell comes off.

A single tiny screw holds the headlamp unit in place, remove it and and unclip the headlamp rim from the shell.

 I refitted the tiny lamp-retaining screw to avoid losing it. You can take the bulb out of the headlamp unit on this bike, but you cannot detach the glass from the reflector. I removed the bulb holder and bulb and then soaked the glass/reflector assembly in citric acid to remove rust around the rim of the glass.
Once cleaned it was stored pending rebuild.

Note that as I'd decided to rebuild on a different frame I removed the rear light assembly and loom from this one and this is described under Frame and Cycle parts.

The acquisition

 Pictures of my latest find... its a garage find... obviously stored for a long time. Seems that someone has been fiddling as the carb cover is off (missing) and the wiring exposed. I agreed a price "unseen" and honoured it although the bike was rather worse than expected. It was filthy and seemed to have been stored outside. There is clearly a transmission fault as the wheels lock up with some sort of clutch problem. If the bike is pushed it resists moving, although the motor doesn't turn. I think it is probably siezed and only moves through clutch slip! Adjustment might help, but the pedals aren't turning anything either so obviously the transmission needs looking at. Id always expected to rebuild the motor so all of that can be sorted in the process. The choke cable is missing... this should have a moulded plug that fits into the frame headstock  down tube. These are discontinued, and in keeping with other spares Ive checked, only available at an inflated price. I ...

Frame and Cycle Parts

The bike is clearly in poor condition and pretty much needs to be stripped in order to be cleaned, checked, repainted and rebuilt. I started this cheerfully enough but sadly during the process I discovered serious cracking in the frame. I COULD weld it, but not being professional I dont think it would be safe and I'd never trust it. At that point this stopped being a repair job and I simply stripped the frame bare. I'll try to find a replacement to use for the rebuild.  The Front Wheel I didnt think that there was much wrong with the front wheel but it was always my intention to rebuild it... and as Im waiting for parts now seems like a good opportunity. This is a shot of the business side of the fr wheel- the brake plate with connections for speedo cable and brake cable. 15mm axle nut also visible althpuigh from this side its the bolt head, the nut is on the opposite side. Saddle

 The saddle is inserted into the frame with a conventional clamp at the top of the seat tube. This bolt also attaches the fuel tank... although in my case this turned out to be badly perforated. a 2 layer structure with a foam saddle built up on a metal pan which is itself sprung to a supporting tray that is welded to the seat post. The seat post is secured in the frame seat tube by a conventional clamp. Remove the bolt and pull out the seat, shown her inverted with the bolt laid beside it. Looking at the seat pan I cou.;ld already see that it was rusted and cracked. I removed the lower seat tray by unscrewing the two 10mm nuts at the front to release the mounting plate and rubber cushions. The rear of the seat is mounted with 2 springs each sandwiched between spring seat discs and retained by 10mm bolts threaded into a weld nut on the upper side of the seat plates. Here the heads of these bolts are visible, released these to allow the lower seat tray to be lifted off the pan....
